The deadline for Aigne’s Call for Articles is drawing near.

Postgraduates are invited to submit articles for peer review by December 31, 2011.

There are two issues to choose from:

1.     Postgraduates who presented papers during the College of Arts, Celtic Studies and Social Sciences postgraduate conference in November are invited to submit their paper to our CACSSS issue.

2.     Postgraduates from across the university are invited to submit an article for our international MEMORY issue.

Our association with memory has evolved through time and socio-technological evolution. Human history can be traced through ancient cave art and monuments, epic oral ballads, the written word and the digital highway. Ethics, morality and identity are all associated with memory and yet memory eludes the greatest philosophers in their attempt to define it. How does memory play its part in artistic creation? How does art transmit memory? How has technology transformed ways of remembering? This edition of Aigne opens up these questions and more to postgraduates from disciplines across the humanities to investigate new research and conceptualisations of memory.

Articles presented to Aigne must be original works between 3,000 and 6,000 words in length. The deadline for submissions is December 31st, 2011. Submissions are accepted in both the English and Irish language – see our website for more information.

How do we begin to answer the question: “Who am I?” or, with the increasing popularity of social networks, “Who are You?” Historically rooted in the collective as well as the individual, traditional conceptualisations of identity have found themselves facing new challenges in a globalized world. Does technology isolate individuals as much as it brings them together? Is identity a construct or is it something more innate? Has identity become a commodity, something that can be created, stolen, or even sold? How is identity represented in art, literature, media, education, popular culture?

In order to answer these questions and more, Aigne is currently seeking submissions on the topic of Identity. Papers may include, but are not restricted to discussions on:

• politics of identity
• identity crisis
• theoretical conceptualisations of identity – feminist, postcolonial, (post)modern etc.
• tabula rasa or “the blank slate” debate
• technology, media and social networks
• religion and faith in identity formation
• identity as performance
• Self and Other
• diasporic reflections on identity
• identification and separation

Articles presented to Aigne must be original works between 3,000 and 5,000 words in length. The deadline for submissions is Tuesday March 1st, 2011. Submissions are accepted in both the English and Irish language – see our Submissions page for more information. Please remember to include a 250 word abstract – with English translation if necessary.
